i rediscored the other day one of my middle-school games – need for speed 2 se (special edition). unfortunately, the install kept crashing on the windows XP box i had handy.

upon running the game, i kept getting the error:

initmem – INSUFICIENT MEMORY TO CONTINUE FILE win\initmem.c LINE 242

to fix this problem, i found out that you need to:

  1. open System in the Control Panel
  2. on the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings
  3. on the Advanced tab, under Virtual Memory click Change
  4. select Drive [C:]
  5. Under Paging file size for selected drive, select Custom size and enter 512 megabytes in the Initial size (MB) and in the Maximum size (MB) fields.
  6. Click set.

I get the same er msg, but the steps mentioned in the abv post didnt seem to fix da problem at my end!! Is ther anythin else tht i cud try?

  2. on 26 Sep 2007 at 2:32 pm Nenji_Avero

I didn’t ever get that message, but when I start the game under XP+SP1/2 I get the message “your memory is lower than 1MB” and when I click ok, I play the game normally, just with a few graphic-coruptions in the speedmeter.

PS: Do you know where I can download a good car editor for NFS2SE?

    thanx

its not work for me either. it seems the problem happen with people that have windows SP3.

anyway your trick dont work. do you have any others idea ?

HAHA! NOW YOU CAN PLAY NEED FOR SPEED 2 SE with my instruction 100% for anybody even if you have windows xp sp3 and 8 gb ram like me.

got it to work. but ita long process.

    1. install Need for speed 2 Se and copy the NFS2SEA.EXE ( 3dfx glide ) from your cd to your game directory. ( you can only get the game working with a glide wrapper.)

    2. Download dgvoodoo1 1.50
( see instruction in dgvoodoo readme file and copy the dll files and the setup files to your game directory)

    3. download microsoft Application Compatibility Tool 5.0

    4. Run Compatibility Administrator from Start Menu.
Go to Custom Database / New Database.
    Click ‘Fix’ button.
Type the name of the game, vendor, and browse to NFS2SEA.EXE file. If it is not in NFS2SE folder on your hard drive yet, then copy it manually from CD.
    Click Next, None, Next.
    Toggle following positions on:
    - CorrectFilePaths
    - EmulateGetDiskFreeSpace
    - GlobalMemoryStatusLie
    Click Next, Finish.
Save your database preferably in game directory.
Now click on NFS2SEA.EXE file in the right panel of Compatibility Administrator. Click Run button. The game should start.

ITS WORKS for any windows xp version even with more than 2gb ram

retry it from the beginning, maybe you did something wrong guy. maybe you didnt understand how to install the glide wrapper , read the glide wrapper infos

  12. on 06 Oct 2008 at 4:20 pm hinsert

hmm doesn’t work for me either, i got a black screen when i start the game after following the steps above. it seems like it’s not working in all cases.

besides i have the networkfix files from EA (an old official NFSIISE patch) which allows people playing the game together via TCP/IP. the steps above also don’t work for that patch either

  21. on 17 Apr 2009 at 6:03 pm lifesucks102

thanks a ton the game is good and i love to play

  22. on 04 Jun 2009 at 3:55 pm Casper

Thanks Rene, worked great! Took me a while to understand what i did wrong but, works fine now!

    A few tips:
Just follow Rene’s steps as instructed, and make sure when you get to the step

“…NFS2SEA.EXE file. If it is not in NFS2SE folder on your hard drive yet, then copy it manually from CD.”

That the NFS2SEA.EXE file is not a shortcut, it needs to be the actual file. I rushed through the steps and failed there! Other then that, worked great.

  28. on 28 Aug 2009 at 2:15 pm Zero

  29. on 22 Nov 2009 at 9:03 pm Falcon

Also you can try with this glide wrapper (nGlide http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide) + install patch included in the games list in the wrapper description (http://www.zeus-software.com/files/nglide/nfs2se_patch.zip). Tested. Game is working with glide + movies.

nfs runs on windows xp in just small change.on first suggesion, open control pannel,in that open system, click advanced tab and click virtual memory and settings, you can type intial memory in mb is 372 and maximum memory is 744 mb.then click set.and restart your system.now open nfs.it works nicely without any problems….

    Good news!

I managed to fix this problem with a modificated exe. I just replaced the conditional jump which test the installed memory, with a permanent jump (JGE -> JMP, in assembly language). In other words, there is no more memory check, and the game works whatever your RAM is. It is only a single byte different from the original Exe, so it can be any malware =). You can compare them with Total Commander or such as.

Correction: “so it can NOT be any malware”

    …what a suspicious mistake, lol

F*ck me, the post was about NFS2SE and I was talking about NFS2… Anyway, if someone wants to pass me the NFS2SE exe, I’ll try to fix it the same way, sorry guys

Thank you Falcon for your help. Your patch file helps me to play NFS SE…

  35. on 09 Nov 2011 at 9:35 am Kasper - Denmark

Rene – you’re the man! I played NFSIISE for hours in the olden days. Even bought a voodoo-card just to play it, and the graphics were awesome. Thanks to your guide it runs perfect on my small netbook! Probably the best racing-game for netbooks with good old XP :-)

i am playing nfs 2 se. it works good but the music is not working. could anyone help me with this problem please..?

  42. on 19 Mar 2017 at 2:51 pm AR87ACE

Hi all, since NFS2(not SE) is one of the greatest racing games i have played in my childhood, i will show you guys how to get pass the INIT MEM error and get it running!
    Here goes:
    click START->RUN
    in the box type msconfig
    click OK
    Switch to BOOT.ini tab
    click ADVANCED OPTIONS
check MAXMEM and change the value of RAM Memory to 1024
    click OK
    Restart PC

This will make your OS use only 1GB of RAM memory!
When you are done playing make sure you revert the changes by repeating the whole process!
THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE THE GAME RUN! Because the game checks for how much memory your PC has and so… if you have more than 2GB it WON’T START!
    Because it is VERY OLD!
    Happy RACING!!! :)

Currently I use the NFS2SE wrapper which can be found here: https://github.com/zaps166/NFSIISE/releases

The framerate is still an issue but it seems like a good starting point to get this game working on a modern pc.

    Thank you! It worked :)

Did I get this wrong? Let me know!
